EARTHMOVERS visited Arclid in Cheshire to complete a CAT 320 SLR Next Generation review.

Here ASHBROOK supplies the balance of plant for Bathgate Industries to extract high-value silica sands.

Not content with taking the first of Caterpillar’s Next Generation 320 excavators into their fleet, ASHBROOK have also added a pair of Super Long Reach versions. As August 2020 saw the company take delivery of the first CAT Next Gen 320 SLRs in the UK.

The new 320SLR has an operating weight of just under 25 tonnes. This means it is the ideal tool for the maintenance and clearance of material from the site’s numerous lagoons.

It sits on a long undercarriage and 790mm wide track pads. Making the machine very stable even in the soft sand that surrounds the lagoons. The requirement to remove as much sand as possible from below the water line means that the excavator is almost constantly working across the tracks.

Digging the wet sand requires both a steady hand and a good eye. Dave Staton, the regular operator, says he is impressed with the new excavator for its stability in this situation. Handling a standard ditching bucket from a 14-tonne class machine, Dave quickly gets a fresh pile of material rising from the ground.

Despite the suction from digging the sand, even nearing maximum reach, the machine remains rooted to the ground at all times. Dave goes on to say that he enjoys his time on the CAT excavators supplied by ASHBROOK as they are very easy to operate.
