What has been talked about less widely is how you might mitigate the effects of such a shortage on your farm productivity. There’s nothing worse than missing the right window of opportunity to do a job, due to a lack of machinery power.
We spoke with ASHBROOK machinery hire to see how customers were turning to them for the answer.
James Ashbrook MD told us, ‘we have seen an increase in the number of customers utilising both short and long-term hire in order to get around the issue of machinery supply. We purchase our fleet at least 12 months in advance of usage, meaning that there’s always supply when the demand arrives.’
‘As we have one of the largest independently owned fleets of JCB telehandlers, CASE IH tractors and Farmlifts, we have excellent relationships with both manufacturers. Thus, ensuring a reliable supply of products and great two-way communication with the supplier.’
‘Consequently, this means we have the right machines for farmers when they come to hire. In addition to this, hiring a tractor, telehandler, or trailer means that costs are fixed once the agreement is in place. There’s no need to worry about spiralling outgoings and a depreciating asset on the books.’
‘It really is a solution which more and more farmers are turning to’, James concludes.
